Sally Field On Filming 'Remarkably Bright Creatures' In Canada

Sally Field would like the United States to play nice with its neighbors to the north.

After winning an Emmy award on Monday night for Netflix‘s , the actress used some of her time backstage with press to advocate for a friendly relationship with Canada, where the film adaptation was shot.

“I do know this that this film was about things that matter to me greatly about friendship, family, and home, and that it was on Canada, our neighbors, magnificent Canada, that I felt so welcomed,” she said. “Fight for it. Stand up for it. Don’t give it away. Resist.”

The small round of applause she received when she mentioned Vancouver, where one of her sons lives, invigorated her further: “Yes, let’s hear it for Vancouver. It’s a filming city, and honestly, guys, let’s keep our friendships. Let’s keep our neighbors close.”

Field didn’t go into detail on her sentiment, but it’s not difficult to draw conclusions about what she might have been alluding to given the strained relations between the U.S. and Canada due in large part to President Trump’s tariff war with the country.

The U.S. has also long lost production to Canada, particularly Vancouver, as well as other territories abroad, which has sparked a years-long effort to bring back domestic film production. Trump recently backed a federal film tax incentive for the first time, opening the door for a potential bipartisan bill before the end of the year.

In addition to accepting an Emmy for her role in Remarkably Bright Creatures, Field also took the stage Monday night to participate in a tribute to her friend Dolly Parton. While speaking with press, she expanded on honoring her Steel Magnolias co-star.

“She was a friend. I admired her. I loved working with her. I never stopped loving her. There were moments where we tried to reach each other, but this is a weird world I live in. This acting world, where you where you do films and you’re so bonded with this group of people,” she said. “It’s like being in battle together. You save each other’s lives, and you got each other’s backs, and you spend 24/7 with each other. We would go shopping together, all of us and go to Walmart together. Can you imagine all of us coming into Walmart?”

Field admitted she hadn’t reunited with Parton in recent years, as “Dolly and I lived so far apart,” but she added: “The times we did reach out, I think she felt that way about me. So I loved her.”
