Academy Award-winning actress Viola Davis will star in The Women King, set to hit theatres this September. The Sony Pictures production, directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, is set to portray actual events in Africa in the 18th to 19th century in The Kingdom of Dahomey.
The film’s dramatic and compelling trailer will surely give you the chills, showcasing a cast full of well renowned and talented Black female actors, and revealing a plot line that encapsulates womanhood’s strength and bravery.

Drawing heavy inspiration from African history, The Women King shares the incredible story of the Agojie, an all-female army that gave their lives to defend The Kingdom of Dahomey from its French invaders back in the 18th century.
The movie takes audiences on an emotional journey, filled with action-packed fight scenes, histological characters, and breathtaking cinematography. Viewers will follow the female-dominated regiment as they unite and undergo rigorous training to protect their home from its unwelcome visitors.
The film’s notable casting should not go unnoticed, as it brings several prominent Black female actors such as Lashana Lynch, Thuso Mbedu, and Sheila Atim to the forefront of the powerful yet overlooked history of the Agojie. Actor John Boyega also makes an appearance, taking on the role of King Ghezo, who was the existing leader of Dahomey from 1818 until 1859.
