'VisionQuest' Showrunner Explains Why James Spader Is Portraying Ultron as a Human

The WandaVision trilogy will come to a close later this year with the release of VisionQuest.

The upcoming Disney+ series will follow Paul Bettany’s “White Vision” after his memories were restored during the events of WandaVision.

“Vision, rebooted and having escaped from those who sought to weaponize him, has been in hiding. Searching for new meaning, he consults the AI personas embedded in his programming, including Friday, Edith, Jarvis, and the infamous Ultron. His discreet existence ends when a bounty placed on his head thrusts him on the run with Thomas Shepard, a mysterious boy who may be Vision’s son, reincarnate.”

What We’ve Learned About ‘VisionQuest’

Fans got their first look at VisionQuest during last month’s D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event.

In the first trailer, Vision appears in his human form, still grieving Wanda’s death.

He then enters the world of artificial intelligence, where he tries to unscramble his mind.

There, he is joined by E.D.I.T.H., F.R.I.D.A.Y., J.A.R.V.I.S., and Ultron, who appears to have had his own mind scrambled.

Vision also learns that Tommy Maximoff is still alive.

James Spader Is Playing a Very Different Ultron

Perhaps the biggest reveal in the VisionQuest trailer was that James Spader will portray a human version of Ultron.

The confused old man is a far cry from the menacing robot audiences saw in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

In the lead-up to VisionQuest, some fans speculated that Marvel opted to showcase Ultron in his human form to help keep the budget lean.

Showrunner Terry Matalas, however, says that is not the case.

Why Make Ultron Human?

In a recent interview with Polygon, Matalas explained why he opted to have James Spader portray Ultron as a human.

“People say it’s a budget thing, it’s not… I also don’t want to see a CGI robot. It’s not going to be able to emote and do the things that James Spader can with just the twitch of an eyebrow.”

While VisionQuest will apparently be bereft of the menacing AI that almost took over the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Ultron’s consciousness remains inside Vision.

Perhaps we will learn more about what makes Ultron tick and what his next chapter holds when VisionQuest arrives later this year.
