The second trailer for Fatherland is out now, giving an intense new look at Paweł Pawlikowski’s Cold War drama starring Sandra Hüller and Hanns Zischler. The film has already drawn major attention after Pawlikowski won the Best Director prize at Cannes.
The official synopsis reads, “At the height of the Cold War, Fatherland centers on the relationship between the writer Thomas Mann and his daughter Erika—actress, writer, and rally driver—as they embark on a road trip in a black Buick cruiser across a Germany in ruins, from U.S. dominated Frankfurt to Soviet controlled Weimar.”

What do we see in the trailer for Fatherland?
The trailer opens with questions about the purpose of the trip and where it could lead. One voice wonders whether it might be “his last trip,” immediately creating an uneasy mood. The footage then moves between conversations, music, and moments of performance.
Music appears throughout the trailer through singing and applause. These lively moments contrast with quieter exchanges between the characters. That shift gives the trailer an emotional tension without relying on large-scale action.
Thomas Mann is also introduced through references to his writing and public identity. Erika appears more direct during several conversations, with frustration breaking through her controlled responses. Lines like “How can you go on like this?” and “I want to go home” add to the tension.
Erika calls Thomas “Papa” in one scene, which gives a more personal feel and shows their family bond. Other lines, including “I never kiss” and “Shut up,” make their conversations feel more tense.
Pawlikowski directed Fatherland and co-wrote the screenplay with Henk Handloegten. The cast also includes August Diehl, Devid Striesow, and Anna Madeley. The film runs for 82 minutes and is in German, English, French, and Russian, with English subtitles.
Fatherland premiered in Competition at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, where Pawlikowski won the Best Director prize ex aequo. It will also screen at the 64th New York Film Festival before its theatrical release on October 23, 2026.
