Arthur Mafokate on Thursday, September 3, 2026, announced that his father, Enos Mafokate, had died at the age of 80.
The Mafokate family released a statement that read: “It is with profound sadness that the Mafokate family announces the passing of our beloved Enos Mafokate – husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, mentor, and pioneering South African equestrian.
“We are deeply saddened by his passing and immensely proud of the extraordinary life he lived and the legacy he leaves behind.”
A pioneering career
Enos, also known as Kgosi ya Dipere – The King of Horses, is a pioneering South African equestrian and showjumper who broke barriers and opened doors. In 2007, Enos founded the first Soweto equestrian centre.
In 1962, Mafokate became South Africa’s first black show jumper. He overcame racial barriers to excel in the elite sport during the 1960s and 1970s. Mafokate was first recruited by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty Against Animals (SPCA) as its first black manager in 1988.
His riding career and love for animals have spanned more than 40 years. Enos was once invited by Queen Elizabeth to perform a show jumping spectacle, and won his first competition when riding abroad.
Taking to social media, the kwaito musician and record label boss paid tribute to his father and wrote: “There are moments when words simply cannot carry the weight of what one is feeling. This is one of them. To the world, you were Kgosi ya Dipere—the King of Horses, a pioneer who broke barriers and opened doors for generations that came after you.
“To us, you were Dad. I will forever be proud to be your son, proud of the life you lived, the battles you fought, and the legacy you leave behind. You have taken your final ride, Ntate. Rest peacefully, Daddy. Your legacy will live on forever. “
The family statement also said memorial and funeral details would be shared in due course. Tributes have poured in, with many public figures, such as Fikile Mbalula, sharing messages of condolence.
