A new Batman movie was just released, and this 2026 project just happens to be the perfect mix of two things DC fans have been asking for a long time. The next live-action Batman movie on DC Studios’ slate is The Batman – Part II. The upcoming DC film will bring back Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne, but will remain unconnected to the DCU.
The Batman – Part II releases in theaters on February 18, 2028. After that, DC will have another live-action Batman movie, The Brave and the Bold, which will cast a new Batman for James Gunn’s DCU and is confirmed to feature the live-action debut of his biological son, Damian Wayne. However, there has yet to be an update pertaining to its release date.
Before those two live-action Batman movies arrive, DC continues to put out new animated releases focused on the Dark Knight. In recent years, animated Batman TV shows and movies like Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires, Batwheels, Bat-Fam, and Batman: Caped Crusader have come out to varying results. Now, it is time for another animated Batman adventure, and it is an intense one.
Batman: Knightfall Part 1 – Knightfall was finally released on the usual VOD platforms to buy or rent this Tuesday, August 25. That will be followed up by a physical release on Blu-ray and 4K UHD on September 8. The DC movie is the first in an announced trilogy of Knightfall entries, and it just so happens to perfectly mix two elements Batman fans have long been asking for.
2026’s New Batman Movie Listens To The Fans’ 2 Major Requests
For several years, DC fans have been asking the studio to make an R-rated live-action Batman movie. So far, that has yielded no results. The closest the studio ever came to that was through Matt Reeves’ The Batman, which did feel like a gritty crime thriller more so than a comic-book-y superhero movie, and could have worked well with an R rating, though it would have limited its profits, as Batman is a brand that attracts viewers under the R-rated age constraint. Batman: Knightfall Part 1 – Knightfall comes with an R rating, becoming as dark and violent as fans have been wanting to see.
Unlike Aztec Batman, which was also rated R, this is a Batman movie that follows the comics closely, rather than creating an Elseworlds storyline. In addition to that, Batman: Knightfall Part 1 – Knightfall also answers the fans’ request for a comics-accurate adaptation of Knightfall and Bane with it. While Tom Hardy famously played the Batman villain in a loose adaptation of Knightfall in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, the DC movie did not live up to expectations. Now, 2026’s new Batman movie blends those fan requests, delivering a high-stakes Bane storyline with bloody, R-rated action that trumps The Dark Knight Rises‘.
Another R-Rated Batman Movie Will Arrive Soon
After Batman: Knightfall Part 1 – Knightfall‘s release this month, DC fans will only have to wait a couple of months for another R-rated Batman movie. While that project is a live-action release set in Gunn’s DCU, it is a Batman villain movie, not one focused on the Dark Knight. Still, Clayface, which will be released in theaters on October 23, will finally delve into the DCU’s Gotham City, exploring the origin of one of Batman’s most popular villains, and its R rating confirms that some grotesque body horror will be going on, as seen in Clayface‘s trailers.
Finally, there is an off chance Batman could debut as a cameo, perhaps at the end of Clayface to stop the villain if he turns violent after fully transforming, which would shake up the DCU in a major way. It would also be the perfect option for DC to follow Batman: Knightfall Part 1 – Knightfall, as it would give fans the R-rated live-action Batman appearance they have long asked for just two months after the animated project that perfectly brought this classic Bane storyline to life.
