James Gunn and Peter Safran are currently trying to build out an interconnected DC Universe populated with characters from DC Comics. Superman got this new DCU off to a solid start in 2025, but this year’s Supergirl was far less successful. At the moment, the new HBO show Lanterns is getting great reviews, so that should get things back on track. And a certain Lost and Yellowstone star knows exactly which gunslinger he’d love to reboot as part of the ongoing DCU.
The horror movie Clayface will open in theaters this October, and Superman: Man of Tomorrow will be here in July 2027. Beyond that, it’s hard to be certain in what direction the DCU will go, since there are several projects that have been canceled or put on hold. But when Gunn and Safran are looking to expand, DC Comics will provide them with no shortage of options.
For instance, what about a new movie about Jonah Hex, the western-themed antihero played by Josh Brolin in the 2010 movie of the same name? Speaking exclusively to Lost veteran Josh Holloway, MovieWeb suggested that he would be a great fit to play the vengeful, swaggering bounty hunter.
Jonah Hex is famous for having a severely scarred face, although the details of how he got it change depending on whether you’re talking about the comics or the Josh Brolin movie. In the film, the makeup was indeed noticeable; Jonah has a stray strand of flesh that connects his chin to his cheek, running over his mouth. It’s very hard to ignore.
And it’s the one thing potentially putting Holloway off. “I don’t know,” the actor responded. “I think the makeup was a little distracting in that.” The Yellowstone star believes that the makeup is partly to blame for the adaptation’s failure. “If they would have lessened that a little bit, it might have hit,” Holloway said. Nonetheless, Holloway sounds interested in the role, assuming it’s all right with Brolin.
“Hey, man, call up Josh. Tell him I’m next,” he said. “I’m next, Josh.”
Although MovieWeb enjoyed it at the time, the 2010 Jonah Hex film was savaged by critics. It tanked at the box office, grossing only $11 million on a budget of $47 million. This was at a very different time for movies based on DC Comics. Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy was enjoying critical and commercial success, but Ryan Reynolds’ 2011 Green Lantern movie was a famous flop, and even 2006’s Superman Returns failed to meet expectations.
But most of this happened before the superhero boom of the 2010s, when Marvel was raking in money from films like The Avengers, Captain America: Civil War, and Black Panther. Spider-Man: Brand New Day is currently on its way to becoming one of the most successful films in history. The market for superhero films has changed completely.
Josh Holloway has played charming, charismatic characters like Sawyer in Lost, Roarke Morris in Yellowstone, and Jim Ellis in Duster. If he tempers that charm with some grit, he could be perfect as Jonah Hex. But let’s see how the next few DCU projects perform first.
