HBO Max released the first five minutes of footage from DC Studios and HBO’s Lanterns series, the first episode of which debuts worldwide on Sunday, Aug. 16. The footage starts off with a flashback to 1996, where a young John Stewart is watching a news report on Hal Jordan taking his place as Earth’s first Green Lantern, which also uses his classic origin story from the comics. When John’s father comes home in a military uniform, he takes John outside and asks him if he is afraid before shooting an apple clean off the top of his head, proving John’s resiliency. The footage then moves to 2016, when John meets up with Hal to seemingly continue his training as a Lantern.
