With the release of Lanterns on the horizon, the DCU is in a unique spot. Following the box office disappointment of Supergirl, the loss of the lead writer for Booster Gold, and the reported cancellation of Paradise Lost and Waller, the DCU is showing signs of growing pains. However, the universe is still moving forward, with Man of Tomorrow set for release in 2027, as well as a television series centered on Jimmy Olsen. One show currently in the works is Mister Miracle, an animated series being overseen by Lanterns co-creator Tom King. Mister Miracle just got a huge update with the reveal that a DCU hero is joining the cast.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Tom King revealed that Nathan Fillion will reprise his role as Guy Gardner in Mister Miracle. Guy Gardner is the Green Lantern member of the Justice Gang. This marks the first official casting news for the Mister Miracle series. Regarding Fillion’s role in Mister Miracle, King said:
“We brought Nathan into Mister Miracle’s show, and doing that, it’s just so wonderful. He brings that energy to every aspect of it. And you would think it would be different tonally from [Lanterns], but it blends because that’s who Guy is. He’s that guy who is over the top. We all know that guy who’s a little bit like that.”
Mister Miracle will mark Fillion’s fifth appearance as Guy Gardner. The actor made his DCU debut in Superman, and followed it up with a cameo in Peacemaker Season 2. Fillion is set to appear in Lanterns, alongside fellow Green Lanterns Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and John Stewart (Aaron Pierre). Guy Gardner will return in Man of Tomorrow, scheduled for release on Jul. 9, 2027. This makes Fillion’s Guy Gardner the DCU character with the most appearances, beating out Frank Grillo’s Rick Flag Sr., who has appeared in Creature Commandos, Superman, and Peacemaker, and will appear in Man of Tomorrow.
Mister Miracle is based on Tom King and Mitch Gerads’ acclaimed 12-issue miniseries centered on the New God. The story focuses on Scott Free / Mister Miracle, an escape artist and New God, as he lives with his wife, Big Barda, only to be disrupted by the arrival of his adoptive father, Darkseid. The animated series was officially announced in 2025, with both King and Gerads involved. In 2026, it was confirmed to be DCU canon.
Mister Miracle is one of three high-profile DCU animated series in the works, alongside Creature Commandos Season 2 and the Blue Beetle animated series. While James Gunn has previously mentioned that Darkseid is not the major villain of the DCU’s Gods and Monsters, the character will make his shared universe debut in Mister Miracle. With Fillion now confirmed to be part of the series, the rest of the voice cast will potentially be revealed. As with Creature Commandos, the intention is for the actors who voice the characters to also play the roles in live action, and vice versa.
Nathan Fillion can be seen on Lanterns, which debuts on HBO and HBO Max on Aug. 16 at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT.
