It Turns Out ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Almost Featured EVEN MORE Villains

The Russo Brothers Reveal Spider-Man's Interesting Backstory Twist

While Spider-Man: Brand New Day is ostensibly about Peter Parker setting out alone in the aftermath of Spider-Man: No Way Home, the film is chock-full of Marvel characters.

As has been widely reported, Peter will team up with Jon Bernthal’s Punisher and Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner/The Incredible Hulk as he deals with a new kind of threat.

Also appearing in the film are numerous characters from Spider-Man’s rogues’ gallery, including Tombstone (Marvin Jones III), Mac Gargan (Michael Mando), the Hand, Boomerang, Ramrod, and Tarantula.

Needless to say, Spider-Man fans have every reason to be excited.

As it turns out, however, there were almost even more villains set to make their debut in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

Destin Daniel Cretton’s Revelation

During a recent interview with Nerdtopolis, director Destin Daniel Cretton revealed that Spider-Man: Brand New Day initially featured a scene of Spider-Man fighting a series of classic villains.

“We were going to throw a whole bunch of villains into this one giant fight that ended up getting cut. We were looking at a lot of the old classics, and it was really fun, though. And we got to design a lot of them. Maybe for another one we’ll bring it back,” he said.

The Takeaways

Cretton’s comments are interesting for a number of reasons.

For starters, it sounds like Spider-Man: Brand New Day was initially going to feature a villain montage, similar to the one in The Fantastic Four: First Steps.

Such a scene would have helped set the stage for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, as four years have passed in-universe since we last saw Peter.

While it would have been cool to see even more Spider-Man villains, doing so might have oversaturated the film.

Additionally, however, Cretton’s tease that the villains could return in Spider-Man 5 should have fans excited.

While Marvel has yet to announce a fifth installment in Holland’s Spider-Man franchise, Cretton has clearly at least thought about the possibility.
