Grammy Award-winning musician Tyla will take over Gold Reef City in Johannesburg for a special A*POP Takeover, in partnership with South African Tourism and powered by Absa.
On August 16, the popular Johannesburg amusement park will be turned into all things “A*Pop” with her fans, affectionately known as the Tygers.
Tyla released her second album, “A*Pop,” on July 24 and is back in Mzansi after a string of global performances, ready to celebrate with her day one Tygers.
Gold Reef City holds a special place in Tyla’s life, as it does many other Joburgers who spent their Saturdays and holidays at the amusement park.
Speaking on eNCA, Tyla shared a little bit about why it was important to celebrate the album with her Joburg Tygers at Gold Reef City.
“Johannesburg shaped me as a person, as an artist. I grew up here, and the Joburg Tigers were my first Tigers to ever know me and support me.
“I really feel good that I’m able to come back and just appreciate, you know, home and also just the OG Tigers and share like a special place cuz I’ve always loved Gold City and I would love to share this that day with everyone.”
Tyla may be a global superstar, travelling all over the world, wowing crowds, but Joburg will always be home.
“Family is so important to me, and home is so important to me because there’s no place like this in the world,” she told eNCA.
“So when I have to travel across all the oceans and go to all these new places, I always love to find time to touch back home and just connect back to my roots.”
Tyla shared on her social media pages how her Tygers can win their ticket to have fun with her at Gold Reef City. Fans can create a TikTok video using any song from the APOP* album for a chance to win a ticket to Gold Reef City and be part of the Fan Appreciation Day.
As part of the initiative, South African Tourism will provide transport for fans from different parts of Gauteng to Gold Reef City, giving young South Africans the opportunity to experience the A*POP celebration and be part of Tyla’s homecoming.
“Tyla has always been authentic in her work. A daughter of the African soil and an advocate for South Africa. I agree with her that you must visit South Africa to understand its beauty and its people,” said Minister of Tourism Patricia de Lille in a press statement.
This isn’t Tyla’s first time doing a pop-up moment with her local fans. Two years ago, Tyla held a one-day-only album release pop-up shop and fan meet-and-greet at the Mall of Africa in Midrand.
Presented by Sony Music Africa and Spotify Africa, the event celebrated the massive global success of her self-titled debut album.
