EFF leader Julius Malema has sparked fresh debate over the influence of digital media after criticising MacGyver ‘MacG’ Mukwevho and his hugely popular Podcast and Chill.
Speaking during a recent address, Malema argued that one of South Africa’s biggest podcasts has become a distraction for young people, claiming it encourages entertainment and excessive drinking culture instead of meaningful political engagement.
According to the EFF leader, platforms with massive youth audiences should be helping young South Africans better understand the country’s political, economic and social challenges rather than focusing primarily on celebrity interviews, gossip and alcohol-centred conversations.
Malema went as far as suggesting that Podcast and Chill was created to “depoliticise” young people, warning that the country’s youth risk becoming disconnected from issues that directly affect their futures.
Instead, he encouraged listeners to seek out content that promotes political education and critical thinking.
One of the alternatives he recommended was the African Renaissance Podcast, hosted by former EFF spokesperson Mbuyiseni Ndlozi.
The podcast, produced by the Thabo Mbeki Foundation, explores African politics, history, economics and culture through long-form discussions with academics, activists and public figures.
Malema’s remarks have divided opinion on social media. Supporters argue that young South Africans need more politically conscious content amid persistent unemployment, inequality and governance challenges, while others believe audiences should be free to choose entertainment without political messaging.
Malema’s comments come after two months, during an episode of “Podcast and Chill”, MacG read out the EFF’s stance on immigration.
MacG quoted directly from the EFF’s founding document. The passage commits the party to protecting all immigrants from mistreatment, advocating for their access to healthcare, education and fair treatment, regardless of their legal status.
In the short social media clip on X, MacG says: “This is the first line, bro. ‘The EFF will take up all struggles of all immigrants (most of whom are economic migrants and asylum seekers in South Africa), whether they are in the country legally or illegally’.
