Ryan Gosling Is Officially Ghost Rider; Film Coming in 2028

After years of rumors, speculation, and heavy-handed hints, Kevin Feige has finally cast Ryan Gosling as the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Ghost Rider.

The big announcement was made onstage in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con tonight, where Kevin Feige revealed that not only will Gosling be joining the MCU, but he will also star in a standalone Ghost Rider film helmed by Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy.

Levy, of course, is currently working on Star Wars: Starfighter with Gosling.

“I’m having the greatest flashback vibes here, because I was here two years ago when we showed ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’” Levy said upon taking the Hall H stage alongside Gosling and Feige.

“I’ll never forget that night, because I was introduced to the greatest fans. Gosling is the absolute [man]. I say that with tremendous respect. We spent a lot of time last year making ‘Starfighter,’ and the opportunity as Ryan started talking about this character, I was like, ‘Bro let’s ride.’ We’ll see you in 2028!”

Previous Ghost Rider Portrayals

While Gosling’s debut will mark the first time that Ghost Rider has appeared in the MCU, the character is no stranger to the big screen.

Nicolas Cage portrayed Johnny Blaze in 2007’s Ghost Rider, which was produced by Sony.

He later reprised his role in 2011’s Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.

Neither film was particularly well received.

On television, Gabriel Luna played the Robbie Reyes version of Ghost Rider in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

At the time, there were plans for a standalone spinoff series.

Those plans never came to fruition.

Gosling Has Long Campaigned For the Role

For his part, Gosling has been open for years about his desire to play Ghost Rider.

Previously, Josh Horowitz pitched the idea to Feige on the Happy Sad Confused podcast.

“Hey man, if Ryan wants to be Ghost Rider…Gosling’s unbelievable. Ryan is amazing. I’d love to find a place for him in the MCU,” Feige said.
