It has officially been ten years since the last Star Trek film, 2016’s Star Trek Beyond, opened in theaters. After years of attempting to get Star Trek 4 off the ground, with Paramount Pictures going through a host of writers and directors, the studio has opted for a full reboot of the iconic franchise. Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, directors of Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, were hired to helm a new Star Trek film in November 2025.
At San Diego Comic-Con during Collider’s Directors on Directors panel, Goldstein and Daley revealed they are still working on the script. The duo said their film will satisfy fans of the franchise, but also create new ones. They confirmed the movie will feature a new cast of characters, a first for the franchise, which has either featured actors from Star Trek: The Original Series, the Next Generation cast, or recast versions of the classic Original Series characters. The duo also confirmed the movie would take place “further in the future than we’ve been before.”
Goldstein and Daley’s comments about taking the movie “further than we’ve seen before” raise many interesting possibilities. This suggests it will take place beyond the 24th century, which was the setting of Star Trek: The Next Generation and its subsequent films. However, it is unclear if Goldstein and Daley’s comments about further in the franchise timeline apply strictly to the movies, or the entire franchise, as Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 onward and Star Trek: Starfleet Academy take place in the 32nd century.
This update about the Star Trek reboot comes one day after the ten-year anniversary of Star Trek Beyond, which opened in theaters on Jul. 22, 2016. Despite earning an 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the movie was considered a financial disappointment, grossing $158.8 million domestic and $343.5 million worldwide. We’re currently in the longest gap in the Star Trek film franchise’s history.
Goldstein and Daley’s Star Trek is part of CEO David Ellison’s plans to relaunch many of Paramount’s marquee franchises. Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is already set for release in 2027, with an unnamed spin-off film set for 2028. A new live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie is in development and set for Dec. 22, 2028. Danny McBride is set to write and direct a reboot of G.I. Joe. If the next Star Trek movie is released in 2029, it would coincide with the 20th anniversary of J.J. Abrams’ 2009 Star Trek reboot.
