Alan Ritchson Officially Confirms Talks To Star as a Major Superhero in James Gunn’s DCU

With how successful Alan Ritchson has become over the past few years, it’s no surprise that the actor is in talks to join one of the biggest cinematic universes. No stranger to portraying a superhero, he played the character Hawk in the series Titans, which was part of the now-defunct DC Universe streaming service. Now that Ritchson has established himself as a movie star, the actor has revealed that he is in discussions to once again play a DC character.

During his appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Ritchson was asked if he has had any conversations with DC Studios co-chairman James Gunn. While not going into specifics, the actor explained how, regardless if it is a major franchise, any project he takes on has to be carefully thought-out, as well as it being a role that is suitable for him. It seems that Ritchson hopes that with the right amount of time and effort, he could have a place in the DCU:

“James Gunn and I have spoken a lot… I really respect James. I would like to do something with James. James would like to do something with me. But it’s got to — my litmus test for what I will take is strict. I pick the s**t out of projects. I know how to develop a project. Anything I do with DC will still meet my standards. It will have to meet my standards. And I hope that we work on something that feels like we’re all making this movie that I would be proud of. There could be a bright future for us. And there have been a lot of conversations.”

In the early days of James Gunn and Peter Safran mapping out the DCU, popular fan castings had Ritchson as Batman, opposite Superman star David Corenswet. Ritchson is perhaps best known for his large build and intimidating presence that he brings to any role, often using his physicality to his advantage. The recent Absolute Batman comic run by Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta has helped to make a bulkier Batman a more popular design of the character.

Unfortunately, while the actor has expressed interest in playing the character in the past, he most recently shut down those rumors, saying in August 2025: “Words have been exchanged about Batman. But I strongly don’t think that Batman is in my future. I do think there is something in my future with DC. And I would like that to remain true.” The best part of the DC Universe is the sheer number of characters that can come into play as the world expands. While Ritchson may not have a character in mind, DC Studios can hopefully find a script and creative team that plays into his strengths as a performer to deliver a new take on a hero or villain.
