We are now getting initial reactions to Spider-Man: Brand New Day from those who have seen the first 30 minutes of the film. The reception has been overwhelming, and that has only increased the fans’ anticipation for the sequel. The final trailer just dropped and wrapped up Peter Parker’s trilogy arc, but there’s also a tease of a new storyline, and hopefully, a new saga. Well, a few close to the production have seen the entire film, and they confirm the movie exceeded their expectations.
Speaking with Collider, producers Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal stated that Brand New Day is visually arresting, featuring shots unlike any from the past three films. “[Director] Destin [Daniel Cretton] did a very good job of pulling from the comics, pulling from very specific comic covers, and even the PlayStation game,” Feige said. “That has added to the visual language of Spider-Man in such an amazing way.” The trailers offered glimpses of these, and Cretton has praised Tom Holland’s physical ability to recreate iconic moments from the comics.
You’ll be pleased to know that Brand: New Day had a director’s cut, and it received a standing ovation from the producers. “It was the first time that Kevin and I stood up after a director’s cut and cheered,” Pascal said. The film’s theatrical runtime clocks at 2 hours and 25 minutes, shorter than No Way Home, but significantly longer than Homecoming and Far from Home. Whether Cretton’s cut will ever see the light of day or not, we can only hope.
Pascal added that, in a way, they have “held back” from depicting Spider-Man as part of New York in previous films — Brand New Day will show Spider-Man interacting with the city like never before. That has been teased in the trailers, especially in one scene where Peter is taunted by random civilians. This has also spawned theories related to the familiar powers of a mysterious new villain, but we can only speculate, since Sadie Sink’s character remains under wraps. Pascal addressed theories about Sink’s role, asserting that the character helps build Peter’s story.
What’s really spurring conversation is Tom Holland’s previous tease about the end of Brand New Day. He confirmed that the final frame of the film will explain the sequel’s title. It is unclear what that may entail, especially since we have yet to hear any confirmation on whether Holland will appear in Avengers: Doomsday or not.
There’s also the burning question over the future of Holland’s Spider-Man. The actor confirmed he’s willing to reprise the role “for as long as they’ll have me,” but had also hinted he’s ready to pass the baton. He even has the perfect recast in mind — Owen Cooper, who won the Outstanding Supporting Actor for Adolescence. Cooper said he’s up to the task, but “In, like, 10 years’ time, maybe.” Meanwhile, both Holland and Feige have also stated their interest in introducing Miles Morales once the animated Spider-Verse trilogy is complete.
