“Snoop,” an R-rated movie about the life of Snoop Dogg, is hitting theaters next summer.
Universal Pictures has slated the film to release on Aug. 6, 2027. It’s currently set to open alongside Disney’s “The Bluey Movie” and Black Bear’s “Jason Statham Stole My Bike.”
“Outer Banks” star Jonathan Daviss is playing the titular role in “Snoop,” described by Universal as the “definitive biopic of the artist, mogul and icon of gangsta rap.” Craig Brewer, best known for “Song Sung Blue” and “Hustle & Flow,” is directing the movie, which will incorporate music from the singer’s vast catalogue. Some of Snoop’s biggest hits include “Drop it Like It’s Hot,” “Gin and Juice,” “What’s My Name” and “Nuthin’ but a ‘G’ Thang.”
Plot details haven’t been confirmed, so it’s unclear if the movie will take a wide-ranging look at Snoop’s career (à la “Michael” and “Bohemian Rhapsody”) or focus on one chapter (in the vein of “Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere.”) A multi-hyphenate — emphasis on the multi — Snoop has maintained his notoriety across decades as a rapper, singer, songwriter, actor, producer, DJ, media personality and entrepreneur (including tech and entertainment investments, and lifestyle, food and beverage and cannabis brands). His debut came in 1992 when he featured on Dr. Dre’s debut single, “Deep Cover”, and then on Dre’s landmark debut solo album, “The Chronic.”
“Snoop” is the first project under the studio’s overall deal with Death Row Pictures, the rapper’s content label. Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer, who worked on “8 Mile,” will produce the movie along with Snoop Dogg and Death Row Pictures President Sara Ramaker.
Universal first announced the biopic in 2022, and Snoop shared at CinemaCon that production is expected to begin this summer.
“Snoop Dogg’s life and legacy make him one of the most exciting and influential icons in popular culture,” Donna Langley said when the project was announced. “We met with Snoop shortly after he acquired Death Row Records and had the opportunity to hear his story in his own words. We are humbled to be able to create the lasting document of this singular artist.”
